Herkimer/Montgomery County Queries for April 1 - 15 1997

Jody Levey Davis Tue 15 Apr 1997
I am planning to be in New York in May on a research trip, spending two days in Schenectady, two days in Montgomery, and one day in Herkimer. In Herkimer I will be working on the family of Samuel LEVEE of Little Falls - 1830 to the present. Some of this family has already been covered in the TIMMERMAN book. I know I need to spend some time in the courthouse itself (wills, deeds, etc). Should I plan on going to the Herkimer Historical Society? Does the Herkimer Library have obituaries? Are they indexed? Would vitals be with the Town Clerk in Little Falls or at the courthouse? I would be most grateful for any suggestions you might have. Many, many thanks!

My grandfather, Hugh Gilbert KIRKPATRICK, was born in Montgomery County, NY in 1872, s/o Hugh and Jane Garret Kirkpatrick. My father told me he was born at Stone Arabia. I have never been able to get any more information as my grandfather died when my father was 11 years old and my grandmother remarried. History was lost in time. Is Stone Arabia in Montgomery County and are there any records for that area in that time? Oscar Kirkpatrick. Columbus, IN

My gggg-grandfather was Augustus VanSLYKE, born May 22, 1777. Augustus came to Cattaraugus Co. in about 1830 with Henry FRANK. Augustus married Henry's granddaughter Nancy Eve. A family member thought Augustus was the son of Peter (son of Jess) born 1763. This would have made Peter only 14 when Augustus was born. Seems unlikely! Augustus named his children: Martin, Mary "Polly", Elizabeth, Henry, John, and Andrew (My ggg-grandfather). I am also interested in the Frank family from Frankfort. I am also looking for the children of a Jeremiah MEACHAM who resided in Montgomery Co. in 1790. Any information would be appreciated.

John NOTTINGHAM, 1800-1810 census, possible father of James Nottingham, lived in Warren or Warren Township in Herkimer County. According to Lake County Illinois history, early settlers arrived there from Warren Township, Herkimer County, NY. They named their Illinois settlement Warren Township.

The succession possibly goes like this:

Additional note: there are two Nottinghams listed in the 1790 New York census--both in Ulster County--Stephen and Margaret. These people are descendants of Captain William Nottingham who arrived in America in 1664. I'm hoping that John Nottingham is the son of one or the other of these two people. The Ulster County Nottinghams have a tracable history.

One final question. How can I find church records for Warren Township, New York? I'm willing to write any number of letters. Thank you so much for your interest and help.

Attached is a very long posting which corrects errors and expands (replaces) my posting of Dec 12. Robert Wallace CLAYTON was born in Charlestown, Montgomery County on May 26, 1832. His parents were John and Marie BLANCHARD Clayton. Around 1847, when Robert was 15, his father left Montgomery County never to return. Family (anecdotal) history reports that John was killed in the Mexican War, but the National Archives reports no that no John Clayton from Montgomery County, NY served in that war.

Family history also records John's father as Farmer Clayton from Townshend, Windham County VT. Farmer married (~1805) Mehitable MILLER of Townshend VT and migrated to Saratoga County, possibly Corinth, around 1810. Their children were Russell, Farmer, Jr., and John. Family stories make Farmer's parents John and Sarah WATKINS Clayton of Townshend, VT. This oldest John is believed to have fought with the Vermont Militia for 165 days, including the battle of Bennington. The records at National Archives show a Jonathan Clayton who married Susanna Watkins and served in the VT Militia. I am awaiting a full report on those records.

In Robert Wallace Clayton's Bible, there is an inscription which describes John as a nephew of Abigale Clayton WELLS of Charleston. Abigale was the wife of Sergeant Robert Wells, a well-known person in Charleston, Montgomery County. Abigale was the daughter of Peter and Rachel Abby Clayton. (b. 1776 Duanesburg, m. Nov 1791, d. Mar 1846 in Charleston). Rachel was Peter's second wife, the first, Mary LYON having died and left a seven-year-old daughter, Mary (Polly) in 1791. Peter, whom I have linked to Jonathan only through the Bible reference to John as his great-nephew, was also a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He served in the PA 10th Regiment from 1777 to 1800. My questions are:

To complicate things, a Jonathan and John Clayton from New Jersey settled in Montgomery County after the Rev. War. Their census records do not match the information that I have as to the ages of Robert and his siblings. Robert Wallace Clayton left Montgomery County as a young man and located in Stony Creek, Warren County. There he lived for over 60 years. Robert was married twice, to an unknown person (possibly from Montgomery Co.) who bore a daughter, Laura, and to Alrena TRIPP of Warren County who bore John Jay, Wallace, and the twins Ella and Delbert. Around 1911 he moved to the Saratoga County farm of my grandfather, his son, Delbert Eugene Clayton. He died in 1925 at age 93. Robert Wallace was buried from Reynolds Corners Methodist Church in Gansvoort, NY, and interned in Griswold Cemetary. Rev.

Daniel OSTERHOUT came from Root, Montgomery County N.Y. He was born 1833. He came to Michigan and is listed in census with John Osterhout family. I believe this is his father as several of John's sons are listed as brothers to Daniel in his obituary. John is married to an Eliza who seems to be too young to be Daniel's mother however. Would appreciate it if anyone has records of these people and their lives in Montgomery County, N.Y. Any information of the Osterhout family would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have been trying to locate information on the BADER family in the Mohawk Valley area of NY. Have recently found out that my gg-grandfather was Mickael or Michael Bader born in Melchor, Montgomery Co., NY. Not sure of year. However, he had a son Benjamin who was born in 1834 possibly in MI. Someone in family told me there was a book written (?) called "The Baders of Mohawk Valley". The Baders came from Bavarian Germany to the US. Any help in locating information or where a copy of the book mentioned would be appreciated. Note: Melchor is not in my NY State Atlas. Does anyone know where it was? The Coordinator.

My great-grandparents, Alfred WOOD ( b1839 ) and Ossay ( b 1847 ) came from Herkimer, NY and ran a general store and bake shop in Selby, Ont. sometime after 1887 . They had eleven children:

Alfred and Ossay came up to Selby, Lennox and Addington County, in Ontario Canada sometimes after 1887 (they are not listed in the 1887 Lennox and Addington Atlas). I know that John, Truman, and Allen lived there also. I believe that Fred was a barber in Boonville, and his son followed his trade, just retiring within the last decade. My grandfather Allen owned a cheese factory (found recently to be Canada's oldest) in Selby until his death in the 1950s. His youngest son, my uncle Gerald Wood, went down to a relative's cheese factory in Herkimer County back in the 1930s or 1940s to learn cheese making. He and my father, Dorland Wood, worked in the Selby Cheese Factory when they were young. When I was a child in the 1950s, we visited my father's cousin George Wood, in Rome NY from time to time. They had a cottage on Fifth Lake in the Fulton Chain near Old Forge NY where we vacationed once or twice. Thanks again for your interest. Sincerely, Kenneth Wood. woodman@ihorizons.net
