I am researching FENTONS. I have an obituary of my gg-grandfather, George W. FENTON born Jan. 11, 1820 in NY (no city or county given), who moved to WI. In 1885, he was survived by three children: Clarence of Springfield (no state given), Edward of Frederick, WI, and Ellen Bergstene of Minneapolis. Other things I've been told is George's wife's name was Josephine, his father's name may have been Abraham and his mother's name may have been Marjean WOOD. I also have the obituary of my g-grandfather Edward J. FENTON, born abt.1864. It states he was survived by 6 children and a brother Clarence FENTON of Cortland, NY.

Also found in my great-aunt's papers were the following names, all FENTONS: Cletus, F. M., Francis, Frederic, David, Henry, Laura, Michael, Richard and Peter, and the following places in NY: Rome, Utica, West Winfield, New Hartford, and Cortland. If you have anything on these names it would be great. I have quite a bit on the WI and MN FENTONS.

I would be interested in finding dates of death of Charles and Bridgit SPAIN. Would like to know where they are buried and where in Ireland they originally came from. I know they emigrated from Ireland ca 1830 and their oldest son Stephen was born in Ireland ca 1829. All other children born Schuyler, Herkimer Co. from ca 1831-ca 1840. He probably died in Schuyler after 1880 and she probably died before 1880 in Herkimer Co., again probably in Schuyler Town.

Seeking information on ancestry of John CAMPBELL, b. Russia, NY 1808. Married Harriet McALLISTER, b. New Hampshire, at Baptist Church, Poland, NY 1844. Lived most of their lives in Newport/Norway, NY. He d. 1888, she d. 1894, buried in Newport, NY cemetery.

Children living at home with John and Harriet on 1860 US census:
Isaac, Hellen, Mary, Catherine, Mary Jane, Allen, Neil, and Howard. Howard is my ancestor. All born between 1835 and 1865 and probably there were more children.

They lived on the "Campbell Farm" between Newport and Norway. Does anyone know where that is? I found two Campbells of similar age to John living in Russia where he was born - in 1850. Possibly his brothers: Leonard who was born in NY, as was John, and Dugall, who may have been an older brother, born in Scotland.

I also found a Jane McAllister, widow, born New Hampshire, living with a boarder, who may be Harriet's mother. Has anyone researched the McALLISTERS who were in the Newport, NY area, and came from New Hampshire/Vermont? Has anyone reserached the family of John CAMPBELL and Harriet McALLISTER who lived in Newport/Norway/Russia, NY early - mid 1800's? If you have any information, please email me at TOMIAMI@aol.com. Thank you!

BURT: Looking for information about and descendants of Alphonzo (Alfonzo, Alfonso) BURT, b. 1815 Little Falls, Herkimer Co. I have documentation of seven generations of ancestors starting with Alphonzo's father, Manesseh BURT. I have very little info about Alphonzo himself and about other descendants. His children with Elizabeth were Maria (m.n. MCCORKLE; my g.g. grandmother), Marion, Alvarado, Arthur, Mary (m.n. BROWNFIELD) and Melissa (m.n. HOLLIDAY). All children born in Little Falls. Alphonzo and Elizabeth appear in the 1850 census in Little Falls but "disappear" after that - where did they go? Any help is appreciated and reciprocated whenever possible.

Hello from St. Albert, Alberta, Canada. I am researching the SPRAGUE surname. Elkanah Sprague was born in Winham Ct., married Mehitable MOULTON in Windham Conn. in 1754 and died in Gloversville, N.Y. His son, Vine Sprague, was married to Mary SHERWIN about 1793. They died within two weeks of each other in Mayfield in 1813 in an epidemic. They left children: Irene, Vine, Jr., Harriet, John, Lyman, and Mary. I would like to trace John Sprague who married Matilda COE approx. 1820, possibly in the Skaneateles area of Onondaga County. They had a son, Horace Edward Sprague who married Nancy Emily TORREY in Lockport, Will-Grundy County, Illinois.

Hayes A. Salsman Sun Jan 5 1997
Looking for anyone doing research on the surname SALSMAN or SALTSMAN from Montgomery Co. Also looking for info. on Almira McINTYRE who married Elias Saltsman in Gilboa, NY.

My ancestory goes back to Georg ( Jergen ) SALTZMANN who was born in 1693. He came to New York ( Mohawk Valley ) around 1708-1710 from Germany. His first wife was Amellia HERTY and his second wife was Ann Margret KEPUTZGI. The surname can be spelled Sallsman, Salsman, Salzman and Saltsman. The different spellings depended on the census taker.

My research with the Saltsmans has taken me to Fonda, Ephratah, Stone Arabia, Palatine, Nelliston, Canajoharie, and St. Johnsville in the Mohawk Valley. There is a Saltsman road north of Ephratah, that heads west off Wood Road. There are a number of Saltsman cemeteries such as : Abraham Saltsman Cem. off Rt. 10, Jacob Saltsman Cem., John W. Saltsman Cem., Henry Saltsman Cem., Tom Saltsman Cem., Jno. G. Saltsman Cem., and Ezra Saltsman Cem.

My gg-grandfather was Elias Saltsman, born Dec.10,1804 in Fonda, NY. Married Almira McIntyre, June 4,1826 in Gilboa, NY. My relatives tell me that she was half Indian. I have found nothing on her or her parents.

My census CD's show that they lived in Norwich, Chenango Co. NY in 1860 and moved to PA. When they moved to PA the surname spelling was changed to Salsman. He was one of the early settlers in Laceyville, PA. He died in June 17,1889 and is buried in Towanda, PA.

Henry PHILLIPS, my ggg-grandfather, was born 1783 in Herkimer County. He married Mary SUTTON. Their son, Nathan, was born in 1811 in Salina. Both Nathan and Henry were blacksmiths. Mary was born in Herkimer Co. as was Nathan's wife, Nancy HARTMAN. Nathan and Mary produced Willett Hartman Phillips on September 20, 1850 in Syracuse. Willett had a sister, Emma, who married Henry ORMSBEE in August 1888. I am hoping to find Henry's parents' names and when they came to Herkimer County and where the family lived (the town).

My wife's 6th GGF Conrad CODER, Sr., came to America from DEU on 16 Sep 1751 and died in 1793 in Northampton Co, PA. I have his children as Conrad Jr., Catharine, Elizabeth, Catharine (Mrs. Martin CONRAD), and Agatha (Mrs. Philip LESSIG).

My wife then descends from Conrad, Jr's, daughter Anna Maria CODER (c. 1774 - 1825 ), who married Johan Georg HOHENSCHILDT, Jr. (1772 - 1810 ) Montgomery Co, NY, son of Johan Georg HOHENSCHILDT (1742 - 1822 ) and Anna Elizabetha WAGNER (c.1750 - 1825 ), daughter of LTC Johann Peter WAGNER, Deputy Commander of Palatine Regt. who fought before Saratoga against the British in the Revolutionary War, and who married a DOCKSTADER.

She then descends from John S. HOHENSCHILT (1795 - 1859 ) and Susannah HARTMAN (1799 -1864 ), of Westmoreland Co, PA, daughter of John HURTMAN, b. DEU d. 1827, and Julianna SPINDLER, b. 1770. Their son George HOHENSHELL (1819 - 1846 ), married Mary SMUTZ (1823-1901 ), whose children became educators at college and secondary level and authored several publications. Mary's father was David SMUTZ (1786 - 1852 ) and her grandparents were Abraham SCHMUTZ d. c 1784 and Mary ROHRER, who came to America from DEU on 21 Sep 1742.

Some of this family are listed in Richard Glenn Huffman's "The Genealogy of . . . Conrad KODER", 1985.

RUSSELL: According to the entries in the Russell Family Bible (1857) which was given to us by a Russell decendant about ten years ago, only William was born in Johnstown, NY. Herein lies the problem - Johnstown was originally in Montgomery County. This county was later divided into several other counties. Johnstown was then in St. Lawrence Co.

  • William Russell: born April 1,1806; Johnstown, Montgomery County, NY. I am assuming this man was the father of George R. Russell, Susan Jane Russell and Sarah A. Russell. (There is a possibility that William Russell may have been born April 1, 1811. According to the Wisconsin census, he was 39 years old, in 1850. )
  • Susan Jane Russell: born 5/4/1836 in St. Lawrence County, NY.
  • George R. Russell: born June 15, 1840 in St. Lawrence Co. NY; (Could he and his sisters been born in Russell(town) NY?) m. 7/4/1840 in Sheboygan County, WI to: Mary ERNESSE (Ernessi, Ernisse, Eernisse); died 4/7/1889 in Sheboygan, WI.; d. 4/7/1889 in Sheboygan, WI.
  • Sarah A. Russell: born 12/4/1845; was born on the schooner "Rochester", on Lake Michigan, off the shore of Sheboygan, WI. Were there schooners on Lake Michigan in December?

p>The following name also appears in the family bible: Elizabeth (Elisabeth) WOLVIN, b. 11/6/1810 in the town of Berne (Albany County) NY. The following marriage is conjecture: William Russell may have married Elizabeth Wolvin.
  • Their child William was b.1832 in NY.

I know all about the descendants of George R. Russell, but nothing about ancestors or siblings. The family maintains that their heritage includes Native American. Is it possible that William may have married a Native American woman? Substantiating that certainly would be interesting. This is all the information I have. Thank you, again!
