Elaine Morris Fri 29 May 1998
Seeking parents of Ira WELLS, born 6 Aug 1803 at Johnstown, Montgomery Co, NY, and married Maria WOODWORTH 26 Aug 1826, at Mayfield, NY. They were the parents of Charles Henry (1828), Willard W. (1829), Mary Jane (1835), Frances Ann (1837), Julietta (1839), John Wesley (1841), and Harriet Elizabeth (1845). About 1836 they moved from Broadalbin, Fulton Co, NY to the town of Onondaga, Onondaga Co, NY. Their two oldest children married there. About 1856, Ira and Maria moved with their younger children to Orleans Co., where they remained. Any help appreciated from other Wells researchers. Elaine Morris   Email:emorris@teleweb.net

My husband's family was located in Herkimer county in the early 1800s - Little Falls and Salisbury in particular. Here are the two direct line ancestors whose families I am researching; their children were born in Little Falls:

Catherine STEBBINS (sister of Dr. William Burrell Stebbins) b. 20 Jul 1818, Salisbury, d. 28 Feb 1899, Oxford ID

Allen Wyman EATON (brother of Volney Eaton who married Alida Herkimer) b. 5 Aug 1817, Little Falls, d. 4 Feb 1900, Oxford ID

Apparently Mr. Eaton was publisher of the Mohawk Courier from 1856-1861. I appreciate any help you can give me. Marilyn Allis  Email: mjrallis@mindspring.com

I signed the guestbook but I don't know if the information was received regarding Major Johnathan BARNEY. Major Barney served in the Revolutionary War; he was born 1755 in Providence, RI; died 5/1814; buried in Norway, Herkimer Co., New York. Major Barney married Elizabeth MASON who was born 1757; died 1829. She received a widow's pension. The only child that I know of was Nancy Ann Barney 1798 in North Swansea (Bristol) RI or Mass. Nancy Ann Barney married Wm. LOW CARPENTER (my ggg-grandparents). They had two children both born in Norway: Edwin Jackson and Daniel Stephen. Does anybody know if there were any more children from Johnathan Barney and Elizabeth Mason?

Here is some information on someone who was born in Norway. Daniel Stephen CARPENTER, son of Wm LOW Carpenter and Nancy Ann BARNEY, was born in Norway, Herkimer County, New York, on 11/12/1829. As a young man, he and a brother left New York and traveled west. He was a scout for a time for various wagon trains that were crossing the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He ran the hotel and pony express stop at Silver Fork. He came to Clayton, California and ran a butcher shop there. He met Sarah Frances Curry and they married 11/19/1863. Daniel Stephen became a Tax Collector of Contra Costa County and traveled between Clayton and Martinez, California by horse and buggy. Later, their family moved to Martinez, California about 1890 where he was Justice of the Peace until he died on 7/4/1905 at the age of 79yrs.

My gg-grandfather, Francis ROOT, with wife Permelia SPAULDING Root and children James and Harriet, lived in Winfield at the time of the 1845 NY state census. Also living with them probably was Francis's good friend, Powell SHELL (the two were born in and immigrated from Poland). Both purchased 40 acres of federal land in the Wisconsin Territory on 12 June 1845 (patent certs 17376 & 17377). All five soon thereafter moved to Brooklyn, WI, where Francis died in 1847. Pat Higley Sun 17 May 1998
David HIGLEY was listed in the Herkimer Co., NY 1800 census as being between 26/45 years of age. A female listed as 16/26 years of age and a male child between the age of 0/10. They do not appear in the 1810 census. My information is that David was killed in a hunting accident and the children were bound out. I have no idea who the wife is. Has anyone ever come across this family in their research? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat. Email:thehigs@olynet.com
