DILATION OF HEART
CAUSES HIS DEATH

Frank L. Steadwell Found Lifeless Near West End Home.

Widely Known Resident, Long Engaged in Realty Business,
Succombs Suddenly While Alone, After Leaving Home for an
Evening Stroll -
Corpse Not Found Until Morning.

Frank Lane Steadwell, a well known resident of Amsterdam, was found dead on the stoop of his property at 20 Henrietta street at 6:30 o'clock this morning. Mr. Steadwell had been in poor health for a long time. He was a sufferer from heart trouble, and since an operation for appendicitis about a year ago his health was still further affected.

During Thursday he was apparently in his normal condition and ate an unusually large dinner. At supper he said that he did not feel hungry, but gave as the reason the fact that he had eaten so heartily at dinner. After supper he sat at the house on Guy Park avenue until 10:30, when he announced his intention of going out for a walk. From that time up to the discovery of his lifeless remains, his whereabouts were unknown to his family.

When the body was discovered it was apparent from the condition of the muscles that death had occurred about four or five hours previous. Mrs. Steadwell was at once notified and gave instructions that the corpse of her husband be placed in the care of Undertakers Johnson & Lindsay. They in their turn notified Coroner Murphy, who stated that it was a case for the health officer, but as Dr. Hicks could not be located, the body was taken to the undertaking rooms, where an investigation was held by physicians later in the day, and death was pronounced due to dilation of the heart.

Mr. Steadwell was born August 20, 1860, in what was then Port Jackson, but now the fifth ward of Amsterdam. He moved to Wisconsin when a young man, and lived there for twenty years, returning to Amsterdam and making this city his home ever since. He was engaged in the real estate business, and a very large number of dwellings and lots in the city have exchanged ownership through his agency. Not quite a year ago he purchased a laundry business on the south side, but disposed of it after six months' operation.

He was a member of Artisan lodge, No. 84, F. and A.M., and of the Modern Woodmen of the World. In his youth he was a member of the old J.D. Serviss Steamer company's running team and participated in many of its races. He is survived by his mother, whose maiden name was Katherine Belding, his father, Lyman H. Steadwell, having died a number of years ago, and also his wife and a daughter, Catherine.

The funeral will be held at the home, 242 Guy Park avenue, either Sunday or Monday, and the interment will be in the Minaville cemetery.

Miss Mary Clizbe.

Miss Mary Clizbe, of No. 285 Locust avenue, died at the Amsterdam city hospital Saturday evening after an illness of a few days. Miss Clizbe was the daughter of Marcus Clizbe and Emily Van Dyke, names well known in the Amsterdam of years ago. She was educated at the Amsterdam academy, and taught for several years in the stone school house on Division street and the nearby country districts.

Miss Clizbe was a member of the Second Presbyterian church and the Good Will club. But it was as the friend and neighbor that she will be remembered and missed. She possessed those powers of adaptability and kindly tact that rendered her presence in a home a comfort and pleasure in the emergencies of life. Many friends and relatives look back with great gratitude to her kindly ministrations. The recent death of Miss Clizbe's sister suggests thoughts, both of pathos and consolation. Having spent their lives together, "in death they were not divided."

Miss Clizbe is survived by one sister, Mrs. John C. Chalmers, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and one brother, William, of this city. The funeral will be held at her late home at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Dr. Henry T. McEwen, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, will conduct the service, and burial will be made in the family plot in Green Hill cemetery. The bearers will be members of the family.

MRS. CATHERINE ETTOR

Died at New York, on Tuesday June 21, of pneumonia, Mrs. Catherine Fisher, wife of Mr. Jacob Ettor, aged 72 years and 2 months. Her funeral was attended on Friday P. M., in the Reformed church of this village, Rev. Dr. Wortman officiating, with the church choir. Mrs. Ettor will be remembered by the readers of the Register, when informed, that her first husband was Christian Swarts, a respected citizen of Nelliston, who died there after a long residence, a dozen or more years ago. A few years later Mrs. Swarts married again, and removed to New York. She is remembered as an amiable and kind hearted woman and an affectionate wife and mother. She had several children, and one of her daughters became the wife of Daniel Dahlen; but her children, except her son George Swarts (now of Nelliston) have all gone to that bourne whence none return. Mrs. Ettor retained her young look, even in death, to a remarkable degree. It is pleasant to look back upon the life of a good and virtuous mother, and embalm her memory in the heart's best affections of the living. We remember one of her daughters who died in her teens, who was then a member of the German Lutheran church choir, and who was sincerely mourned by her young associates. But the family are now, with the exception named, reunited in that better home - "Where the wicked crave from troubling and the weary are at rest."

IRVING HESS

Irving Hess was born in Hallsville, April 10, 1846, and died of consumption, in Fort Plain, June 21, 1881.

He came to Fort Plain in 1864, engaging his services as clerk in the store of O. O. Austin, with whom he remained some three or four years, when he left Mr. Austin to sell goods in the new store of his uncle and brother, W. G. Diefendorf and James Hess. He remained with this firm during their continuance in business, and then returned to the employ of Mr. Austin, remaining with him one year, when he started the business in which he continued until his health failed, when he disposed of his trade and stock to the present proprietor W. E. Diefendorf. He was in business on his own responsibility about ten years.

On January 24, 1868, he was married to Miss Catharine Young, who, with a little daughter of six years, remains to mourn his loss. He was connected and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in the winter of 1866, during the pastorate of Rev. B. F. Hawley, D. D., now of Saratoga Springs. Mr. Hess was class leader or S. S. superintendent most of the time during his christian life.

The funeral was from the auditorium of the new M. E. church, where a sermon of great excellence was preached to a large and appreciative congregation, by his former pastor Rev. Dr. Hawley. [next paragraph goes on about he was a man of integrity and fine character]

As might be expected his death was triumphant. In his last moments he pointed toward that "undiscovered country" and exclaimed: "It is all bright over there." I think it is not too much to say that he was a fair example for our young men to follow. The widow and fatherless little one are already committed to the hands of our covenant keeping God. May writer and reader meet the loved departed on the ever-green shore.

L.E. M.
Fort Plain, June 29, 1881.

new11/17/15   from The Mohawk Valley Register, Fort Plain, NY, unknown date in early February 1882

Death of Daniel Smith.

Mr. Daniel Smith, long a worthy and respected citizen of Palatine, died at his home in Nelliston, on Friday the 20th ult., in the 79th year of his age. His father, Gilead Smith of Saratoga county, having there married Eleanor Disbro, removed to the town of Salisbury, Herkimer county, where the subject of this notice was born. He had one brother and two half brothers and two sisters, all of whom he has now joined in the spirit land. When grown to manhood, Daniel Smith married Miss Delight, a daughter of Simeon Ives, of the neighboring town of Norway, and continued to reside in Herkimer county until 1839, when he went upon the celebrated Col. Wagner farm, situated on the Mohawk Turnpike in the town of Palatine, where he soon ranked with the most successful dairymen in the valley. After leasing the farm for ten years, his industry and perseverance enabled him to purchase it. Having erected a nice mansion near the R.R. Depot at Nelliston, he went thither to reside in 1865, leaving J. Harvey Smith, Esq., the oldest of his two sons in charge of the farm.

Of this farm I may digress to say, that it is one of the best farms ins the valley, gently sloping with its broad flats southward to the river. The stone part of the dwelling was probably erected 130 or 40 years ago by the Wagner family, and before the French war; there having been at that period, a chain of stone dwellings erected along the valley early after the settlement of the country, the better to protect the settlers from the incursions of Canadian white and Indian foes. The old Van Alstine house at Canajoharie, and the Frey and Ehle dwellings yet standing in Palatine were of this class, and there is another perhaps a mile below St. Johnsville, occupied by John Klock, in the Revolution. These buildings should all be preserved by the greatest care. The Frey place was, and probably they all were fortified in the French war; and certainly the Wagner house was in the Revolution. The oldest living representative of this respectable and wide spread Wagner family, whose ancestry dates back to this old house, is my antiquarian friend Hon. Peter J. Wagner, of this village, who was born in 1795, and is now verging upon his 87th birth day; and the most successful one as distinguished by wealth and worldly honors, was the late Senator Webster Wagner, whose tragic fate just at this time the whole valley mourns.

Mr. Smith, the subject of this notice, in his pure and unostentatious life never brought a stain upon the good repute of the old home of his manhood; which, as the writer well knows, has witnessed the frequent gathering of numerous, hospitably entertained guests. Mr. Smith and his family have ever ranked with the best, most social, hospitable and friendly families of the valley, always with the latch-string out, and often with a sumptuous dinner behind it. Although not professing religion, he was constant in attendance upon Divine worship, living an exemplary life; and has no doubt gone to that reward that awaits all who endeavor to square their lives by the GOLDEN RULE. The sympathies of a large circle of relatives and friends are now with Mrs. Smith and her two sons. The deceased was buried from his residence on Thursday the 26 ult., Rev. Dr. Wortman assisted by Rev. Mr. Brown officiating. Mr. Smith had selected as a text for the occasion the last verse of the 17th Psalm - "As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness." He also made a selection of four pall-bearers. Peace to thy memory old friend, whom I hope to meet where it is believed, friendships will never end.
February 1, 1882. J.R.S.

JOHN W. BRANDOW PASSES

A feeling of sorrow pervades Van Hornesville, for one of its best known and best loved residents, in the person of John Wordon Brandow, has joined the silent majority. His death occurred Thursday, Jan. 30, at the home of his only son, Ralph, in Herkimer. Mr. Brandow was ailing in health early in the Winter, and he decided to go to the home of his son to spend the remainder of the Winter. He was able to be about the son's home and entered into the social activities of the household even as late as Wednesday night. Thursday morning he said he felt fairly well, but while the son was absent from the father's room for a few minutes the venerable man passed away. His death was characteristic of his life - peaceful and with perfect resignation to the Divine order.

Mr. Brandow was born on the Brandow homestead farm in the town of Springfield, south of Van Hornesville, in 1842 and was therefore in his 85th year. His parents were the late John W. and Catherine Conine Brandow. He remained on the farm until he reached the age of young manhood and then took up his residence in Jordanville, where he was engaged in business for many years. Over 15 years ago he went to Van Hornesville to make his home with his sister, Mrs. Ida Young, and to take the active management of the properties of his distinguished nephew, Hon. Owen D. Young, to whom he was indeed the beloved Uncle John, with all the depth of affection and loving kinship that the term implies. Between the two there was that feeling of confidence and reliance on each other's judgment that was most beautiful and wholesome. Mr. Brandow acted as Mr. Young's representative in Van Hornesville in the work of building the new school and all the past Summer acted in the same capacity in the construction of the teachers' home. It was with much reluctance that Mr. Brandow was compelled to relinquish the work a few weeks ago on account of his health.

In 1867 deceased married Maria Van Horne, a member of an old family closely identified with the history of that section. She died in 1915, and there survive the son named, two daughters, Mrs. Lena Loveland of Herkimer and Mrs. W. I. Taber of Utica; two grandchildren, John Worden Ellwood of New York and Miss Fernabelle Brandow, a teacher in the Saugerties, N. Y. high school; one sister, Mrs. Ida Young, and two brothers, Alfred of Van Hornesville and Leroy of Fort Plain.

A prayer service was held at the son [sic] at 10:30 Saturday, and the body taken to Van Hornesville for the funeral in the afternoon at the Methodist Church, Rev. W. H. Skeels of the Universalist Church at Herkimer officiating and burial was made in the Van Hornesville Cemetery.
