I am planning to be in New York in May on a research trip, spending two days in Schenectady, two days in Montgomery, and one day in Herkimer. In Herkimer I will be working on the family of Samuel LEVEE of Little Falls - 1830 to the present. Some of this family has already been covered in the TIMMERMAN book. I know I need to spend some time in the courthouse itself (wills, deeds, etc). Should I plan on going to the Herkimer Historical Society? Does the Herkimer Library have obituaries? Are they indexed? Would vitals be with the Town Clerk in Little Falls or at the courthouse? I would be most grateful for any suggestions you might have. Many, many thanks!

LINGENFELTER - There were two LINGENFELTER families in Montgomery county in 1790 - Michael and Johannes. There were at least 22 children between the two families. Am waiting for the lucky day when I can correspond with anyone having a LINGENFELTER in his or her charts. I believe I am descendant of Johannes contrary to what the Jefferson County, NY histories led one to believe. Help me prove it, please. Shirley Farone.

LINGENFELTER - I'm researching the Michael LINGENFELTER family who lived in Montgomery County circa 1774. At least two brothers, Michael and Johannes, purchased 800 acres in Montgomery County, NY sometime before the Rev. War. They each raised large families in the area. Need help in identifying which of the brothers was the father of John, b. 1783, who moved to Jefferson County about 1838. He married Elida WINNE of Montgomery County, N. Y. Will share my info. George LINTNER, Sr. (LENDNER) was born in 1744, originally from Ziverbrenken, Bavaria. Ziverbrenken may be what is known today as Zweibruecken, originally a part of Bavaria, now a part of Palatinate. It is not clear at this time when he came to this country. Many Germans emmigrating to other countries between 1683-1820 did so to escape religious persecution following the changes brought by the Thirty Years War and by economic hardship. It is likely that most Germans at that time traveled up the Rhine River, leaving through Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, records of departures were not kept during this time. It is likely, however, that George Sr. arrived in the port of New York City.

We know George Sr. married Elizabeth HILBERT in 1770 at the age of 36. Elizabeth, born probably in Germany, in 1743, was 37. George apparently lived within Montgomery County, New York as a yeoman. A yeoman is described as an independant farmer, below the gentry class. According to the Mohawk Valley Land Record Abstracts from 1738-1788, George and another man named Steven SCHRYVER, purchased 400 acres on 6/2/1773 from Philip LIVINGSTON, a merchant of New York City. The price was L242 or 242 Pounds. There is some question if George lived in New York City at the time of the purchase and then moved into the Valley to begin farming.

We know that George Sr. fought in the Revolutionary War as a private in the battle of Oriskany. He served under Capt. KLOCK under the command of Gen. HERKIMER in the Tryon County Militia. He served in the 1st regiment, Tyron County Militia under Coll. Samuel CAMPBELL and Ebenezer COX. Little else is presently known about George and Elizabeth.

George Sr. dies January 27, 1826, after a codicil to his will on January 12th of 1826 in Minden, at the approximate age of 82. George Sr. is buried in Minden, New York Mt. Hope Cemetary. Elizabeth dies in July 11th, 1818 at the age of 78 and is likely buried in the same location.

There are at least five known children (not ordered by age):

I am Jeff Lintner, ggggg grandson of George. My e-mail address is sfeap@aol.com.

My gg-grandfather, Isaiah J. LUTHER, died in 1907, Oakland County MI. The records show that he was born in the state of New York, 17 Aug 1827. His father, Gilbert Luther of MA and mother, Sarah Von ROLLINS. The only Gilbert Luther I have been able to locate in this time frame in NY is shown in the Federal Census of Herkimer County, NY. If anyone out there is able to shed any light on this subject, I would be very appreciative! Other families which I am searching in the New York area are COLE, FETTERLY and MOSHER.
