This list of members of the Second Regiment, Infantry, was abstracted from the full regimental roster in "New York in the Spanish-American War 1898: Part of the Report of the Adjutant-General of the State for 1900", Albany, NY: James B. Lyons, State Printer 1900. These men may not necessarily have been residents of Herkimer or Montgomery Counties but enlisted and reported for duty at the nearest armories in Mohawk and Amsterdam. A few men traveled to join their neighbors at Camp Black at Hempstead Plains, Long Island.

Men who enlisted at the State Armory in Mohawk were members of the Thirty-first Separate Company (Third Brigade), known as Company G, which was originally organized November 25, 1878. The Forty-sixth Separate Company (Third Brigade), which became Company H of the 2nd Regt. Infantry, enlisted at the State Armory in Amsterdam (located at Florida Avenue and DeWitt Street). The 46th was originally organized September 6, 1888, and was on duty at Buffalo during the switchmen's strike in August, 1892.

Mohawk Valley soldiers were rapidly mobilized during a period of intensive recruiting. The 2nd Regiment never made it to Cuba, spending most of the duration of this short war camped near Tampa, FL. There were several false alarms at which times the men were issued rations and ammunition but fate deemed that they remain in camp drilling. Capacity of the transport ships was overestimated, their camp was struck by lightning, commanding officers were relieved of their duties and replaced, other regiments were called first, or later transport ships were deemed unsanitary. By late August 1898 the men of the 2nd Infantry were ordered back via train to Troy, NY and sent to Averill Park, NY. On September 15 the whole regiment was given a 30-day furlough. Companies G and H of the Mohawk Valley were the last two companies of this regiment to be mustered out. Although never leaving American soil, these men were all eligible for pensions for active duty in the Spanish-American War.
